Students of Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ), located at Cheri-Manatu on Ranchi Ring Road, erupted in protest after a dead rat was found in their dinner plate. The incident occurred during dinner service at 8 PM, sparking outrage among students. Furious students vandalized the mess and staged a sit-in protest outside the administrative block, with nearly 100 students joining the demonstration.

Health Issues Reported

The food quality was allegedly substandard, leading to over 20 students falling ill. Several students experienced vomiting and had to be rushed to the hospital. While most of them have recovered, two students are still receiving treatment at RIMS.

Late-Night Chaos and Management’s Silence

Students tried to contact the warden late at night, but his phone was switched off. This escalated the protest, with over 100 students gathering outside the administrative building. The demonstration continued past 1 AM and remains ongoing. Students claim that despite repeated complaints about the poor quality of food, the university administration failed to take action.

Drunk Supervisor Accused of Assault

At around 1 AM, mess supervisor Puran Mahto arrived at the scene in an allegedly intoxicated state. Students accused him of assaulting them, prompting a police complaint. The police intervened and arrested the supervisor.

Monthly Fees Yet Poor Services

Students, particularly from the Science and Mass Communication departments, alleged that despite paying ₹2,600 per month for meals, they were being served substandard food. Complaints made earlier were ignored by the university administration.

Health Minister Steps In

Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari has taken cognizance of the matter. He has directed the Food and Drug Department to investigate the incident and promised strict action against those responsible for the negligence.

The students’ protest continues as they demand accountability from the university administration and immediate improvements in the food quality and overall facilities.
