Jamtara : In a major crackdown, Jamtara police have arrested six cybercriminals responsible for over ₹11 crore in fraud across India. These tech-savvy individuals employed sophisticated methods, including AI and malware, to steal personal data and defraud bank accounts.
Over 100 Fake Apps, Centralized Control
The criminals utilized more than 100 deceptive mobile applications designed to siphon personal information from unsuspecting users. They also operated a centralized control panel that enabled them to intercept victims’ SMS messages and extract sensitive data. Police discovered a trove of information, including details of over 2,500 bank accounts belonging to Punjab National Bank and Canara Bank, which were exploited for fraudulent activities.
AI-Driven Malware and Advanced Techniques
According to Jamtara’s Superintendent of Police, Dr. Ehthesham Wakrib, these criminals showcased a high level of technical expertise. They leveraged artificial intelligence and tools like ChatGPT to develop sophisticated malware and execute their elaborate schemes. After a month-long surveillance operation, the police successfully apprehended the criminals and dismantled their extensive network.
Recidivism and Stringent Charges
Four of the six arrested individuals have prior criminal records, underscoring the gravity of their offenses. The Jamtara police have filed charges against them under various provisions of the IT Act, including fraud, data theft, and cybercrime. The case was registered on January 26, 2025, under case no. 7/25.
Seizures and Public Warning
The arrested individuals include Mo Mehboob Alam, Safauddin Ansari, Mo Arif Ansari, Mo Jaseem Ansari, Sheikh Belal, and Ajay Mandal. The police seized 14 mobile phones, 23 SIM cards, 10 ATM cards, a laptop, two cars, a DSLR camera, a drone camera, and ₹1,08,800 in cash during the operation.
